Restorative Yoga

WHAT IS RESTORATIVE YOGA?

Restorative Yoga is a deeply relaxing style of yoga.  Unlike a typical Flow class, restorative poses are held for at least 5 minutes usually.  Supports are utilized, such as blankets, bolsters, and blocks so the body is given time and support to gently unwind.  The body can let go of deep holding patterns and be brought into balance so the fascia (connective tissue) can release.  This practice gives the body time to open up as the mind is trained to find quiet.

WHAT YOU MAY LEARN FROM A RESTORATIVE PRACTICE

This style of yoga  is a therapeutic approach that restores the physical body, this process leads to self discovery.  You may find your nervous system is unable to simply sit still without jumping, or the long held tension in your hips or shoulders may actually begin to let go, with the right support and deep breathing.  As you lean into “limitation” you cultivate compassion as your emotions find ease.  Active people often create imbalances in the body from overuse.

WHEN TO PRACTICE AND WHAT CAN BE GAINED

A restorative practice is passive in its approach to place the body into shapes that are effective, without strain on the physical/mental leveL, as it gently loosens the muscles.  Restorative is great after surgery, it may prevent disease as it calms the mind and builds immunity by soothing the system.  It can also help women’s issues, relieves headaches, carpal tunnel, sciatica, and spine issues.  As this practice decreases the pain response, the root cause of pain can be discovered, such as how we typically hold our posture (for example, someone who is very forward thinking may have a hard time actually being grounded to live in their heels, their head is actually forward out over the toes).

Restorative yoga enhances patience, as we contemplate presence, and the stillness to explore the mind/body connection.

SIGNS YOU MAY NEED A RESTORATIVE PRACTICE:

Trouble falling asleep, sudden movements cause pain, tired upon waking, unable to turn off the brain, anger & irritability, life drama/chaos, extreme multitasking…

HOW RESTORATIVE YOGA WORKS

Restorative Yoga dissolves tension as it fills all levels of our being with a deeper understanding of how we process life in our body and mind.  Time and support fosters gentle unwinding as the body rebalances, the mind finds ease and relaxation.
